Dickissel

The Dickcissel’s latin name is Spiza americana. They live in America. The preferred Dickcissel habitat is grassy fields, meadows, and forest edges. The Dickcissel bird breeds in the spring and summer. They winter in northern South America. Their population status is of least concern. The Dickcissel can be found at Coal Creek Farm from May through late August. It is a very vocal bird.

The Dickcissel song is a series of percussive notes for which the bird is named: dick-dick-dick-ciss-ciss-ell. The call, usually given in flight, is a loud, burry bzzrt! This bird’s diet consists of seeds, spiders, grasshoppers, grains, caterpillars, termites, flies, wasps, beetles, and willows. Only the female Dickcissel feed the chicks.
