Song Sparrow

The Song Sparrow’s latin name is Melospiza melodia. It lives all over North America. Their preferred habitat is thickets, brush, marshes, gardens, fields, stream sides, and woodland edges.

The Song Sparrows breeding season is between late winter and early spring. Most of them are non-migratory, but some birds winter south. The Song Sparrow bird song (or Song Sparrow bird call) is like many other songbirds – the male uses its song to attract mates as well as defend its territory. The Song Sparrow’s population status is of least concern. It can be found at Coal Creek Farm year round.

Their diet consists of many insects, seeds, fruits, beetles, caterpillars, dragonflies, spiders, snails, and earthworms. The Song Sparrows nesting period is from 9-12 days.
