The Osprey

The question, “What is an Osprey bird?” has many answers. For example, the Osprey’s latin name is Pandion haliaetus. It is found on all continents except Antarctica. The Osprey’s preferred habitat is ponds, lakes, river, and marshes bordered by trees. They usually lay eggs in April or May. The female Osprey bird lays 2-3 eggs at 1-3 day intervals and incubates them for 37 days per egg. Even though baby Osprey birds hatch a few days apart, aggression and dominance by the older chick is rare. Most of the Ospreys that breed in North America migrate to Central and South America during the winter. Their population status is of least concern.

The Osprey can be found at Coal Creek Farm year round, especially during breeding season. The Osprey is a bird of prey. Their diet consists of mainly fish (99% of their diet), small mammals, birds, or reptiles. An Osprey bird in flight is a beautiful sight to see. It has arched wings and drooping “hands,” giving it a gull-like appearance. The Osprey bird size is smaller than a bald eagle but larger and longer-winged than a red-tailed hawk.
